I was struck by the varied texture and color of this section of a standing lodgepole pine at the St. Mary's Pass Trailhead. The warm, early morning light helped to bring this old tree to life.

Any ideas on a better title?

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Thank you for thoughts on my recent postings, and on this one too. cool

I like this a lot! Really minor, but I might consider a little vignette along the left side and top left corner to keep attention in the frame. But like I said, very minor.  And maybe brighten the low-middle tones a little in the upper third? Really well seen and executed.

Beautiful bark abstract, Preston.  Love the flame white areas accented by the nice morning light.  Very nice.

Preston,

Where was this? When did you get this?  where was I?  I don't remember this...angel  But sure glad you found it.  I really like the richness of the browns to golden browns. And for some reason my initial thought was to turn this on its side,  turning CW.  I think there's a nice flow (when rotated) from the UL to LR with the darker knot anchoring. What makes this one unique are the lighter, frosty-shaped like areas (for lack of a better description.)  This is a intimate and terrific study. Good eye on this one!

I would agree with a slight burn of the lighter streak heading out the bottom, but that's minor.

Another fine example of these intimate various tree profiles, Preston. Very nice indeed. No thought for change here for me and the warm tone works perfectly IMO. You must have a neat collection of these by now for a good start on large wall gallery I would think.....laugh

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! I did my best to implement them.

Here is what I did...

Used a TK burn layer on the upper left corner and left side, and the white area at bottom, at 16% brush opacity
Used a TK Mask to bring up mids in the upper third
Used a levels layer after TK Sharpen to pop the high values (243) and reduced the mids (0.98).

If you have any further suggestions, please share them.

Lon: This the standing pine right next to the trail. At the time, I believe you were shooting the hollow snag off to the right the morning after the storm.

Yep, the repost is the ticket here, Preston.
Head scratch?....I just realized you posted a large version too. I might take another look at mine.

Hey PB,

Small and subtle changes can make big differences.  Nice job on the rework!

Although I'm a bit disappointed you didn't implement my suggestion of a horizontal presentation. sad  (just kidding for those folks reading...)
