Little Blue Heron

Almost adult immature Little Blue Heron, I think.

9/12/17, 5:46:16 PM
Canon EOS 7D Mark II EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM +1.4x III @401mm
f/8, 1/2500, -0.67, ISO 3200 (big mistake)
Aperture Priority, Evaluative Metering
Imported into LR, processed in CC PS 2017, tiny amount cropped off bottom, small amount cropped off top.

This is in my flooded (thanks to Irma) back yard.  I had room to put a stool out there where the water has receded a bit and try images of some wading birds.

The water reflected the light, even at 5:46 p.m., so I tried exposure compensation for the first time.

I made a BIG mistake and left the ISO at 3200 from when I was trying some birds in shade/trees.  That's really embarrassing.  It's too easy for me to forget about things when it's been a long time (3 months) since I've been able to do this.

Even so, I didn't have any trouble processing this, starting in Adobe RAW.  I'd like to know what you think about the processing.

With the ISO mistakenly at 3200, I did do light noise reduction on the background even on these small images.

But I do like the image in general, the colors of the water, the bird on the floating grass, and the fact that it was very unusual for this particular bird to come that close to me and basically pay no attention to me, so that's why I'm posting it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.  Please view the "larger" version.  Thank you!

It looks like ti worked out quite well, Barbara!  The only sign of noise is a very small, uniform grain which doesn't bother me at all and it's still showing lots of detail resolution.  It sounds like it was a fortunate opportunity and you certainly made the best of it despite the ISO thing!  I think it would be a good thing to know that you can shoot at ISO 3200 and still get a very nice image.

Excellent image quality for that iso, Barbara.  I can see noise in the bird, but not that much and the bg is excellent.  Detail in the plumage is very good.  I'm glad you're back and safe.

Well done, Barbara. I think you're correct that this LBH is almost adult. You handled the high ISO well without significant noise which, as was mentioned, looks more like traditional film grain. As to focal length, it's a little cramped. I've gotten very good results with that same lens and TCs, so I know it produces excellent results. And since you're not hindered by a prime lens, backing off on the focal length would work better to give you some more space for the bird to look into. Thanks for sharing.

Certainly doesn't look like a backyard shot.  Not a very good way to get waterfront property but at least your house stayed dry.  The light on this is really nice and I like the water in the background.
