Salmon in a Hole

In early August, I took a photo trip with Ron Niebrugge in Alaska's Inside Passage aboard the yacht Discovery.  Since my return, I have been occupied with forming a new non-profit wilderness stewardship group for Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri and am only now getting back to my Alaska photos.  We spent a day at the U.S. Forest Service viewing area in Anan Creek, where at least two dozen Black Bears came down to fish the salmon run.  It was a very difficult environment for photography. It was a clear day, producing harsh light contrasting with the darkness of the canyon and the black of the bears.  I managed to get relatively even light on this bear as he retreated into a hole in the cliff face to dine on his catch. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF100-400mm @ 400mm, manual exposure 1/1600th at f/5.6 and ISO 2000.

It's pretty cool how well the salmon pops from the dark surroundings.  About the only alteration I'd consider is cropping from the right slightly in order to center the subjects.  Otherwise, I like the balance between light and super dark tones here.

Charles, this is a pretty darn good action photo.  The bear looks tired from a hard tays work, but he's bring home the meal.  Very good job!

To me this is a creative, unique capture.  I very much like how much of the image is dark, yet you have enough detail to separate the bear from the surroundings.  The salmon serves beautifully to pull the eye to the center of the image, with great detail, including the fish eye and expression, with upturned tail showing life reaction, rather than a drooping dead fish!  VIEW LARGE.  I like the subtle highlights of water droplets and shiny claws.  And a key thing is that the bears forelegs are braced at an angle against the rock, creating a sense of physical tension and an implied compositional diagonal across the frame.

Thanks all , and especially Lon, for the very encouraging comments!  I came back with many images of bears with salmon but I like this one the best.

Looks like there was fire in the hole Charles. That is a black, black bear. Love the mouth around the salmon. Great job getting the detail in the fur and the water drops for such a dark setting. Great shot.  Congrats on the WP.

Charles: this is a fine study in darks. What sets it off even further, is being able to see the eyes of both  animals and the curved, light body of the salmon which frames the bears' face. It's a wall hanger. Richard
