Pronghorn on guard

Here is a pronghorn male in full prime condition.  He is intently watching surroundings for competitors, as it is the beginning of the annual fall breeding season, which in ten days time will be reaching a frenzy.

This was captured just before sunrise, and I would have liked a little more light, but the pose and the sky were appealing to me.

Nikon D610, Sigma 150-600 @ 220, f6.3, ISO 1600, 1/800, -0.3 comp, selective tweaks of levels and noise reduction

One of the better pronghorn photos I have seen! (or taken)  IMHO you captured a great moment in this pronghorns life.  It would be beyond my   PSE skills, but I do wonder how this would look if you darkened the sky?  Thanks for sharing.  Makes me want to hope in the car and head west!

I am impressed that you were able to get so close without the animal bolting.  And I like the low angle as well.  When I lived in northern Colorado, I found Pronghorn very skittish, and was never able to get a shot I was proud of.

John: very nicely done. The pose and techs are spot on, with the animal being captured against a fine Western sky.  Richard

More light is not necessary Lon. This is great as presented. Nice composition, great color in both sky and grasses. Love the catch light (anticipatory gleam?) in the buck's eyes and detail in the antelope. One for the wall.

Lon, this is a fine look at a prime male.  The low angle sets him off very nicely against that lovely "crack of dawn' prairie sky.

Nicely composed environmental image.  Evokes the feeling of the open plains and big sky.

This is a wonderful view of a beautiful animal.  Both exciting and calming.  The sky provides a gentle, calm feeling, and the low angle gives me that feeling I think we both know, waiting for an animal at dawn.  I actually think stronger light might have taken away some of that feeling in this image.

I love the dim light and colours of this shot, Lon. Beautiful animal as well. Great shot!
