Black-Capped Chickadee

Another one from a couple of weeks ago.  The bird activity around here is really slowing down now with most of the fledglings out.  We may get another flush of Goldfinch juveniles, but the first group already seems to have mostly moved out.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, tripod with ballhead and Sidekick, f/8, 1/800, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 12 MP before resizing.  Taken at 8:15 am on August 2nd.

Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

A very nice look at the chickadee. Excellent detail, nice catch light, interesting perch, and fine background.

Nice pose, perch and background.  Whites on the cheek appear to lack detail.  These guys barely make it into California along the coast.

Nice one, Dennis. Good pose, perch and eye contact. I believe you could eke out a little more detail in the bright cheek patch, but not much. Personally, I would leave it as is.

I like the lighting on the Chickadee although I think you could tone down some of the brightness or highlights on the lichen of the perch.  It is so bright it has a tendency to draw my eye away from the bird.  And while the whites on the face of the Chickadee are correctly exposed, you might be able to extract a little more detail from the posterior part of the face.  I sometimes try to do that myself.  The background is really fine.  I like the variations in the background.    However, despite that minor criticism, this is a very nice image.

Dennis, this is a very nice look at this bird. I like the detail in the perch, but could see it burned down a little as others have said. I might try alternate crops or cloning out of the moss hanging under the branch at the left edge.

HI Dennis
The perch is a little bright but I like the way the Chickadee stand out from the background, nice work.
