Turquoise-Fronted Parrot

I've recently returned from Brazil.  It was a great trip, filled with several new species I'd never seen before.  Early on, we had an opportunity to spend some time in a canopy tower on the edge of the forest.  Generally, I don't have a lot of luck in these towers, with subjects either being far away or too small for decent photos.  But this visit was different, as we had some nice moments from parrots, macaws, falcons, storks and even some flying monkeys.  I hauled my 600mm lens and tripod up there, which made it a bit tough to follow and photograph birds in flight... but a few shots actually came out.

This is a Turquoise-fronted (or Blue-fronted) parrot, definitely one of the more colorful species of many seen during the trip.

Canon 1DX
Canon 600mm + 1.4x
ISO 400
1/1600th
f/5.6

Max:

Very nice frame.  Love the top side bank on the parrot to show off all the colors.  Nice image.

Hi Max
Your photograph of this Parrot, made it worth hauling up all that gear.

The level of sharpness that you achieved on this Parrot is something I know that even under the best circumstances you could not duplicate with one of the lightweight 150-600 mm telephotos (especially since you can't use extenders with them) and the levels of contrast in the image just prove the quality of the prime telephotos.  But they are difficult for birds in flight.  I really like what you were able to do with this photo.

Thank you, everyone.  Obviously with this species, the fact that it banked at this angle and gave a view of those wonderful colors on the back and wings made the shot.

Gorgeous Max. Fantastic light and color. I really like the very light ghosting of tree branches in the BG here. I think it adds a lot of dimension to this image.
