E. Sierra Abstracts Repo

Hi Folks,
As promised in the "Another Snow Day Please" thread, here are two alternative crops that are quasi abstract (relative to the originals, anyway).  The first is the one I had initially envisioned, and it is the most abstract of the two I will share here.

As always, I post for feedback and appreciate all reactions (from enthusiastic applause to expressions of utter boredom with the image).  Please let know know what you think and
offer any and all suggestions for improvement.

And here is the crop suggested by John Williams (thanks neighbor!)  It is really not abstract, but I like it as well or better than the abstract.

Interesting, maybe I need a scotch, (wait maybe!) or maybe I have been beating my head against the wall on a tough image for most of the evening.  I really like the premise here, but I think the obscured stand of trees needs to have just a little more visual weight.  The fore ridge is beautiful, I think the background is a bit light.  I do like the alternate crop.

I like the atmosphere in both views, Marylynne. The bit of trees poking through the fog in the first adds interest, but I am unsure if it is enough to make up for so much of the image being blank. I do like the loook of the lower in the clouds. My preference is therefore for the second overall. The bit of trees poking through the clouds at the bottom is a nice feature.

Thanks, Scott and Gary.  It's funny how what initially draws us to a particular composition doesn't always 'stick' in the landing.  The more I look at the little cluster of trees poking through, the less interesting it is, and the more interesting I find the fully revealed ridges and tree shapes in the foreground.  The thinning fog around the trees almost looks like a bad use of adjustment brush in LR, but I double-checked, and it isn't...just darker ground pushing through the fog.  I think this looks better in B/W too.  There is something about the bluish cast (natural, but not becoming for the image) that isn't working for me.

On the "John Williams" crop (devil) I'm thinking a little more off the top would be useful.  There is a tish too much sky there, especially with the bit of blue in the upper right (and maybe a tish off the left too, where the clouds are thinning).

Marylynne, I like what you captured here and think it is a very interesting composition. It's amazing what fog can do! I like your processing and the blue tone shadows look very realistic to me. I do kind of wish for a few more trees showing in the upper left corner through the fog but this is what was there and it still works fine for my taste. Looks like one could get lost in that fog in short order. Cool shot!

Thanks for the feedback folks.  I did a tish more with this one, including "placing" a few more trees in the fog to enhance that part of the image.  Let me know if this makes it better, if it's growing on you, or if it is losing its charm indecision

I like both color versions Marylynne.  Your second version is my favorite.
