Red-shafted Flicker

I had the zoom on 600 mm when this guy suddenly appeared.  Knowing how skittish they are, I shot one frame of the front half of the bird before zooming out.  It was lucky that I chose to do so as it flew just as I clicked the shutter release and I got nothing but unartistic blur.  I decided to crop the first frame to a head shot and here's the result.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, tripod with ballhead and Sidekick, f/8, 1/250, iso 1600, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 11.2 MP before resizing and I added a touch of canvas on the left and bottom for composition.  Taken at 8:45 am today under cloudy skies.

Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

A very nice study in detail. Flickers are big enough IMO to be shot this way.

I am glad that you clicked the shutter for this one too, Dennis.  I am not familiar with this bird, but he is beautiful.  Such great detail in the feathers.

Very cool to see this Dennis.  I've never seen this species.  Perhaps it'll come back and allow you to take more photos.  I like the headshot composition.

Absolutely perfect detail and beautiful colors on this one, and I really like the result.  I, too, am really glad you clicked the shutter release to get this one.
