David, I really appreciate your "eye" in choosing to capture this unusual image taken from your kayak as I probably would have just kept on paddling :-) Great color and interest in the reflection and reflected light. My only suggestion would be to consider cropping a little off the top to eliminate the irregular background. Either way, I like it a lot!

This looks very intimidating from your perspective in the kayak David. Like a semi truck that decides to park on your bumper at a stop light. Good job seeing and sharing. A photo with a built in story.

Thanks everyone for your comments on this. Yes from the perspective of a kayak in the harbor, especially with large boats (such as freighters, tankers, etc.), it can be intimidating and things look very different with respect to size. In this case, the tugboat bumper are layers of old tires connected with cables. Apparently this is common practice on tugboats or was at one time. This picture was actually taken in Bellingham harbor in Washington state. In Olympia, where I live, we have a tugboat festival every summer, which includes tugboat races. These bumpers appear to be the norm. Many of the boats that participate in the festival are antique. Along with the Wooden Boat Festival which also occurs in Olympia each summer, there are ample opportunities for abstract nautical photographs, whether from the vantage point of a kayak or from the dock.
