Another of the images I was able to capture a few weeks back of a Loon pair and their chicks. The tail of the female was slightly clipped from the full framed image, so I cropped  from the left to offer an intimate look of the chick under the protection of its Mom. I was amazed really at how comfortable they were around me on my kayak, which I think is evident from the relaxed look of the chick.

Wow, pretty impressive!  You must've gotten pretty close.  Nice exposure, and great subject. devil

Very cool look.  Nice intimate image.  Sounds like this is cropped from the left?  If so, I'd loosen up the crop just a bit so the adults head isn't quite as close to the edge of the frame.

Yes, I think you're right Keith. I've made more room on the left in the re-edit.

Best,

Chuck

I think the repost is better, but I'd push it further and include even more of the mother.

Excellent, Chuck.  Incredible detail in the mother Loon, and I like the looks of the chick.  I'm rather surprised at their reaction to you as when I've been in a canoe or kayak the birds have still been pretty skittish.  Is this an area with lots of kayak traffic?

The repost looks about right to my eye, but it's pretty much a matter of taste.

Chuck, as Keith suggests more space behind mom is a good choice. This is a fine example of mom's protective instinct that allowed you such close framing, otherwise she would have been long gone.  Nice work to get them in good focus.

This is very cool.  I'd try Keith's suggestion and go even further to the left to include more of the mom.

I am just amazed that you were able to get this close.  I can rarely get closer than 100 feet to any duck in my kayak even if I practice my most stealthy approach.  Good job on the loon and the chick.  Light is very pleasant.
