I must appologise for my lack of comments and postings of late but its been busy times. There have been a couple of sea bird trips up North and I,ve re designed two of my bird bathing/drinking pools. The garden and green houses have sapped my free time too !
I decided to get more pics in the can and post later. The tropical temperatures over here have   really brought some stuff to the pools.
Anyone who has worked magpies  knows what a pain they can be. Not just the black and whites photographically but after generations of persecution they can be nervous to say the least. These at pool No2  are just starting to get used to the hide so I have been concentratuing on them for a day or two.

Thanks for looking

A nice capture, John.  You did a great job with the blacks and whites in this bird.  Looks like he has his eye on you.

Hi John,crying
It's really a crow in a tuxedo.  You did very well controlling the blacks and whites.

A perfect job on the exposure, John, and the plumage detail is exquisite.  I like the branches in the pond. They lend a natural look to it.

Thanks all
Dennis-yes thanks. In actual fact it is about as natural as one can get. The  sticks in fact get moved around quite a lot. Especially by birds llke these !
Thanks for your interest.

Great detail in this Magpie, John. I like that pose with the slight head tilt, It gives a nice look at the eye. Your exposure looks dead on, both blacks and whites look great.

Thanks all. Forgot to mention- matrix metering, and EV-down one third of a stop. So that's  about right for a black and white bird in  bright light. Never going to be  spot on for blacks and whites. In the past I,ve been on spot metering and if its on  a black or white bit alone the results are terrible.

Larger version shows wonderful detail, perfect exposure.  What a great job you have done not only for yourself for your photography but for the birds, as well, with your pool setups.

Nice shot of the Magpie, John!  The large image makes a big difference as it shows far more detail.  The background isn't very interesting but it's sure a nice capture of the bird.
