Spring Blizzard

by Peter Richter

During our Easter holidays last week, we experienced an unexpected blizzard in the northern part of Lower Austria. It was amazing to me to see the first lush greens together with the delicate pattern of the snow covered trunks. This is just a snapshot from inside the car with a smartphone, as I did not have a weatherproof camera with me.

Comments and critique are welcome.

I love the light and painterly look Peter.  I am on the fence about the tree in the center being too centered.  Wonderful contrasts between the trunks, snow, and greenery.

I like it for the painterly look as well. This image has a lot of subtle vitality due to the slightly curved trees, the sinuiting snow marks on the bark, and the miniature grass arcs. It's very unusual to see so much green in a snow scene like this.

I love the graphic nature of this image. Like Eva, I'm conflicted by the central placement of the tree

Well that looks really neat, despite the equipment. The delicate patterns on the trunks are very cool. Glad you were able to capture the memory so well. Those camera phones can take some pretty good shots, but really like the comp you made here.

Peter, I'm really enjoying this image...even if you did shoot it with a smartphone. Just shows one that it is more about the photographer than the equipment. The combination of snow on the tree bark and the green grass just looks great to me. The comp works fine for me with a V leading back from center and some very nice processing too. We had snow here this morning!
Haven't been on here much recently but hope to be back more before long. Nick

Peter,

This is beautiful!  Not sure I care what you used to capture this.  The only bad news is that you might not be able to enlarge to a 60" print... ;-)

What everyone else said. And I'm not bothered by the central, forward trunk.  I think it brings a dynamic to the scene. The mix of green and white with the snow-dusted trunks just makes for a beautiful image.  Love this one.

This is fascinating, Peter, with it's almost black and white look interrupted by the nicely scattered greens both in the trees and on the ground.  A great take on a normally mundane subject.  I'm fine with the centered tree at the front because it starts this strong diagonal of trees leading into the rear corner.

What unique scene and a superb capture of it, Peter!  The stripe of blown snow on all the trees gives it a manufactured look (fake trees) and the snow in the grass adds completes the effect.  The large version is especially nice.  Great shot! devil

I like this a lot! It has a most surreal look to it. The snow and fresh leaves and grass provide such a contrast. Great stuff.

Another example of a fine eye and beautiful scene captured well even with a non-pro camera.
This is very peaceful and serene - a lovely image. I think I'd also try to move the center tree a bit to the right, if possible - but exceptional just as is.
Congrats on a fine WP!

Serenic scene of trees. The fog or blowing snow creates a mood that is more attractive than on a bare cloudy day. I wonder if this is created in post-processing or it's just like that.

Nice composition. The partly snow covered meadow seems has a leading line from the open space on the bottom left corner to some point in the middle of the right edge. Who would not stop and admire the nature?

I am interested to see what it looks like if the tree in the center of the image is moved a bit to the left.

The graphic power of this image is amazing, Peter. It is very inspiring getting confirmation that the equipment plays just a small part and that we are the most important tool. Thank you.
