Lonesome Oak

Lon and I were out on a backroad in the Tuolumne County Foothills this past weekend spying out interesting oak trees. We found this gorgeous old oak guarding the top of a hill.

The challenge in processing this was obtaining nice detail and color in the clouds and sky, and good color in the grassy hillside. I used masks on curves layers generated from 'Blues-Lights', and 'Yellows' channels available in TK's Version 4 Actions panel. I also used various standard TK lights and mid-tones luminosity masks.

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts are always appreciated. cool

What a majestic tree. I love the colors. I wonder how it might look in better light or BW

I love the character of this majestic oak along with the blue and green combination of colors in this scene, Preston. Really nice job on this.

Beautiful old oak.  What a wonderful canopy on full winter display.  Nice lead in with the exposed rocks and a super color combo.  Nice work as always, Preston.

Preston, Setting up this comp as you did really puts this wonderful oak on display. I like how the rocks lead me into the scene and the slope of the hillside works great. The sky and clouds look good and makes a perfect backdrop for this wonderful old oak.

Love the shape of that tree, Preston. Really has great character, and it looks great against the nice sky. I also like the great diagonal line of the hill, and the blue/gree color combination. Lots to like in this fine image.

We do have beautiful old oaks in California.
Like this a lot - exceptional detail in the oak.

Excellent Preston!  I'm really enjoying the vertical comp here and the play between the spring greens, scattered rock, and then the lovely oak and complimentary sky.  this all works wonderfully together.

The only minor thing to point out would be that I would wish for more room on the right.  Because the slope and oak are leaning towards the right, I would like to see more room on the right, relative to the space on the left (of the tree.)  But I suppose we're splitting hairs at this point.

I commented at the time that I'm always look for that "perfect" oak tree.  While not perfect... this one is unique and downright just a beautiful oak tree - love that canopy.

Enjoying this one PB!

Beautiful oak portrait. As usual, I would not mind it a little warmer in the grass, but that is my eye. Sweet!

This is excellent, Preston. A magnificent tree, beautifully framed. The rocks add some nice visual interest in the foreground. I would love to see this comp. when this tree has fresh green on it!

There is a most interesting balance in your composition for me, Preston. Your image gives me the opportunity to explore and enjoy the beautiful structure of this majestic and impressive tree.

A beautiful take on this old master.  the slight diagonal adds so much to this, as do the rocks in the FG.  No nits at all Preston!

Preston: I love oak trees. We have some massive ones in Texas and I'm hoping to find some good subjects this spring when I go wildflower hunting. Classic comp here and really good processing. Well done. >=))>
