This is the Griffith Observatory from the trail above it to the highest point in Griffith Park. this is right smack int he middle of Los Angeles where we like to see our air... Canon 40D, f11, 1/100 sec, iso 400, +.3 EV, 17-85 IS lens at 76 mm, 2 second timer on bean bag.

I am guessing you used your haze filter here because the air looks mighty clean.  I am not accustomed to seeing Los Angeles from this viewpoint with such clarity.  (Just kidding of course)  I do like the lighting in the image.  I think you have a very nice composition here with placement of the Griffith Observatory where it is in the frame.  If I were going to make any suggestion, I might make this more of a panoramic image and cut approximately 20% off the bottom.

So that's what downtown looks like from the observatory. Some years ago we visited L. A. and the Observatory. A shot from this point would not have shown much of downtown-the smog was very heavy.  I echo David's comments and would take them a bit further by cropping not only from bottom, but also a little from top.

I like the view here, Ed, the contrast between the lovely green hillside below the observatory and the cityscape beyond says a lot about how we live and why green spaces are important.  While downtown LA is clear, there is also a slight haze and a touch of yellow low on the distant horizon.  Clear indications of polluted air.  I get to see that as I drive into DC as there's often a dome of yellow haze clinging to the Potomac River over DC.  Given the atmospheric conditions, I'd guess that state-of-the-art astronomy from Griffith is limited, but that there are still lots of neat things to view, especially if they offer regular public viewings.

I'm OK with the stuff in the FG, Ed, but agree with eliminating much of the dirty, featureless sky. It might make a nice monochrome conversion. It also looks like a good spot for some night work.

Never been there, but this is a great view of the Observatory with the LA skyline in the bg, Ed. I like the natural setting in the foreground which contrasts nicely with the cityscape.

This is nice view of the observatory and the LA skyline. The air quality has certainly improved from when I lived in Pasadena in the sixties. The light and the color look nice, here.
