Dunes

From my SW trip last spring. If you go out early and you go out far, these dunes can provide an amazing sense of isolation. After going out at least a mile, I probably spent three hours roaming and photographing these dunes without seeing another person or another person's footprints.  D600, 18-35 @ 18, f20, 1/25, iso 200, gnd, tp. Suggestions and other comments welcome.

Scott: this is excellent in all respects. The light, subject and composition all are there and make a great photo. It elicited a Wow when I opened it. Congrats! Richard

Excellent, Scott.  Love this sweeping, textured, wonderful b/w dune image. Very engaging.  I'm sure that was three hours you'll never forget.  Beautiful work.

Scott, one of my favorite dune images I've seen, and I've seen and made a lot of them.  Death Valley?

Thank you, Jeffrey. Yes, Death Valley - Mesquite Dunes at Stovepipe Wells.

Gary, you are absolutely right about that three hours.

An incredibly detailed image, Scott. I like the shapes of the dunes in the foreground as well as the mountains in the background. The bw is outstanding. Well done!

Scott,

This is quite simply, an outstanding dune landscape image. Wow!, this is just awesome.  I love the pristineness of the foreground dune patterns and how they lead the eye right up in to the scene.  Great play of light and shadow in the midground and then the centered presence of the rugged mountain - perfect.  Oh, then there's the sky and clouds... what else could top this off.

Not only is this a beautiful landscape.  I dare say it's just about perfect.

My only suggestion is post it larger so I can enjoy it even more. It is a beauty! Love it!

Wow, Scott. This is most excellent. Even the clouds cooperated to make this strong composition. That sweeping dune coming forward and growing in size to just dominate like that. Looks like a real winner to me.

Scott, while in the middle of deleting every one of my Mesquite Dunes pics, I thought that I would tell you that I think your image is simply stunning.  It has everything I would dream of having in one of my photos - seductive curves that lead one into the scene, symmetry of light and dark tones,  and clouds that draw the eye toward the mountains in the distance.  It's a winner!

Beautiful, Scott. I really like the way this is composed. The ripples and dune shapes work wonderfully to pull my eye into the frame.

Wow, Scott, a wonderfully long view down this dune.  The mountains and sky add some fine context and a great sense of place.  The textures in the dune are so sharp, i think they could cut.  Beautiful!

Scotty, you got it going!

Such great harmony between the dunes and the mountains, the lead is never ending and the return is very sweet as well. I miss the "Sandbox Boy's" images that inspired me coming back to this web again and again, so empty your sandbox and give as some more.

Scott, This is some amazing photography. This composition is absolutely wonderful with fantastic light and shadow. The conditions look awesome and you put your skills to work making this beautiful image. The black and white processing just doesn't get any better IMO. devildevil Nick

Dude this is killer Scott!!!!!!

The leading lines in the sand are so sweet and really bring the viewer into the image with so much stimulation. The processing is perfect for me, and wow look at those sweet tones in the larger view. No suggestions from me, just sitting here really loving this one,

Awesome work!!!!

Amazing shot, love the ripples!  So many interesting focal points in the image, near to far.  The dark areas at the top of the sky look a little choppy to me, if that makes sense. Not smooth gradations, I guess.  Sometimes this happens when I convert to BW in dark areas of sky for me during my conversions, not sure what the correction might be.  I might just be viewing at these smaller sizes.  Really impressive view and detail in this.

Scott, I like how the ripples and shape of the dune combine to lead the eye to the mountains in the back.  I wonder how just a few more points of brightness would look.

This is fabulous, Scott.  Is this shooting in the opposite direction of the road, or did you find a way to make Truckee Mt. not look hideous?  Just wonderful.  It makes me want to go back.

Thanks, Marylynne. Yes, shooting back in the direction of the main road. Is that Truckee Mt.? Good to know.

This is a powerful image. The side light, the curve lines of sand dunes leading to the mountains, the silver tones are perfect. Mirrored the lines of sand dunes on the sky are the clouds, creating a repeated pattern.

I would say this is a technically perfect black and white image. I would like to see its colored version, which I believe is also great.

Just one question: maybe I never go to the desert, are there mountains in the desert?

Best,
Bo

Hi Bo. Thank you for commenting on this image. To answer your question, this was taken in Death Valley N. P., and Death Valley is surrounded by mountains, including some (but not the mountains in this image) as high as 10,000 feet. These dunes are at just about sea level, so the change in elevation here is quite dramatic.
