Simplicity

Amongst all the rather gaudy and flamboyant tropical blooms on Kauai, this one that we ran across at the McBryde Gardens was rather refreshing in its subdued character and simplicity.  Unfortunately, it was not labeled, and I have no idea as to the species.  Since this garden is dedicated to species from tropics all over the world, it leaves things pretty wide open.

This is a very worthwhile stop as are the other three parts of the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai.  Note that we caught the earliest shuttle from headquarters at 9:30 and they started filling up shortly thereafter.

5Diii, EF100 f/2.8 macro, hand held, f/8, 1/160, iso 500, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to a 4x5 from a vertical original.  Taken January 30th, at 10:18 AM.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Very pretty with attractive leaves to go with the nice bloom, Dennis. The stem in the ULC is a bit distracting, but I otherwise like the comp and dof managment that shows the surrounding greenery.

Dennis: I'm no help on the ID but this is a beautiful subject nicely captured. I see what Scott means with the stem and I think I would be tempted to add a dark vignette to tone it down and emphasize the flower even more. 2 thumbs up. >=))>

This is an intriguing picture, both from the standpoint of an interesting subject, well taken, and from the post processing possibilities. I agree with Scott. In point of fact, I think the whole ULC is the weak point of the image. One way would be to deal with just the stem. Another, as Bill suggested, is a dark vignette. Another might be to selectively place a gradient mask inside the green leaves bounding the area, grading to black. I think it would be worth playing with to see what you could come up with.devil

Hey Dennis,
This is a lovely bloom and you captured the detail and colors perfectly with a very nice DOF. I agree with the thoughts about the upper right corner and my first thought was to clone it away with the background from the lower left corner or perhaps from another part of the original image that was cropped off.
The background leaves are stunning and really contribute to the overall composition . . .  laugh

Nice detail in the flower and I like the pattern in the leaves as well and the complimentary colors.  I agree with the comments on the upper left corner.  Perhaps you could clone the leaf next to the stem over the stem or darken the area to match the lower left corner.

So what you're saying is you missed some of the record rainfall in the Northwest. sad  I'm envious.
