Cape Perpetua Seascape

Hopes for an interesting sunset image at Cape Perpetua, Oregon faded as clouds low on the horizon extinguished any remaining color in the sky.  As my "technical advisor" risked life and limb in his attempt to capture some dramatic images of the collapsed sea cave that is Thor's Well while keeping an eye out for sneaker waves, I turned my attention northward toward the distant storm clouds and took this image.

Very dramatic sky, lovely water cascading over the rocks, and interesting rocks.
A "shadow" adjustment might bring out a little more detail in the dark rocks, but a very sweet image as posted.

The large image opens up the shadows quite a bit and that really helps lighten the image a bit.  I like dark images, so it's fine for me.  Could make a compelling b/w it you were so inclined.

I like this, Paula.  There is a lot of interest in the water from the small cascade flowing over the rock in the center of the frame to the crashing wave on the left.  There is also some nice texture in the clouds.  Since color is not a significant element in the scene I could see this working as a B&W image.  I would suggest brightening the foreground rocks just a little bit, There is detail in the large version, but I think it would help to brighten them a little.

Hi Paula,

A nice scene with lots of water motion. You might be able to play around with the darks to bring out some detail.  Overall, I like the scene and composition............................Jim

Nice seascape. I tend to agree that a bit of shadow adjustment would be helpful, especially in that center fg rock which is virtually black in all versions. The white water is a bit confusing as well. In some areas it's bluish and on the right it's pure white. Perhaps it was burned in more aggressively on the left? Good strong composition with wedges pointing to the center.

Paula,

I like this very much.  I think you have a really strong composition that really showcases all the elements, including the dramatic sky.  There's a lot to explore here.  Regarding the comp as I mentioned, all the elements contribute. The land's end up top - you've included just enough so that I don't feel like it's cut off. In other words, I always say if you're going to include something, include it; otherwise remove it completely.  The same could be said for the retreating water in the LL.  I like the sense of motion and flow of the water filling in from that corner.  Then of course there is the sky, the almost-angry ocean and the rugged rocky shore.

It all works, I have no nits or suggestions.

I love all the elements in this image Paula! The textures in the water is so nice, the comp is spot on, and the clouds up top are very intriguing. I love this one very much!!!! The only thing I would adjust would be the dark foreground rock i the middle of the image. I would like that to be a bit brighter, and call this image sweet!!!!!!
