The 'Ugly' Duckling ?

During the recent trip to Florida for Spectrum, Miami, we had the chance to get out to the Keys for a morning shoot.  After the sun had long since risen the waterbirds drew our attention. This "Rag-A-Muffin" was the only one of its kind (presumably a young bird) in amongst the beautiful, pristine white Ibises. The very light sand at Anne's Beach, Islamorada, and the bright light lend themselves naturally to this high-key finish.  The OOF Ibises represent for me a hint of the future elegance and beauty that the "Rag-A-Muffin" will no doubt one day achieve. That he/she also seems to be considering whether there may indeed be a small fish under the plant was a nice addition.

I have, however, absolutely no idea what species the bird is and would very much appreciate it if somebody with considerably more experience than me could lead me in the right direction.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and successful New Year with the best light,

Mark

A very artistic image and one that I like, Mark.  You came up with a stunning composition and the high key presentation worked beautifully.

I believe your main subject is a juvenile Night Heron, probably the yellow-crowned species, but I'm not sure.  Hopefully one of the really good birders will chime in.

As Dennis wrote this is a juvie Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, with its own beauty when observed properly. It would be looking for crabs but would likely take fish or a snake if given the chance.

I like this high key interpretation of the scene as it simplifes things to a few compositional elements.

A very interesting high-key image.  Nicely contemplated and composed.  Looking through my bird books, I would agree with Dennis's id.  The yellow-crowned night heron has a dark, thick bill while the black-crowned has a yellowish bill.  I also agree with Dennis that your composition is quite artistic.

This is nicely done.  I have captured countless images of the juvi YCNH, and in my opinion they're more photogenic than adults.

As already noted in comments by others this is a beautiful image nicely contemplated and composed.  It was educational for me and I thank you for that.

Many thanks for the comments and the identification - 'The Little Prince' was certainly a very interesting subject ...
