Early Christmas

This Kestrel has been stopping by our yard and perching on branches we've attached to bluebird/swallow boxes on a daily basis for the last couple of weeks.  I spent Wednesday morning at Ridgefield and when I came home it was perched in the sun just begging for a photograph from the camera packed in its bag.  With yesterday and today forecast as dry weather, I set a portable blind up within range of its favorite perches just before lunch yesterday.  After lunch and a nap, I went out to try my luck.  I had just gotten set up and settled into a camp chair when it landed on the perch I'd focused on.  It only happens that way in fairy tales, I know, but it actually did.  The only down side was that the fog had lifted but not burned off, so I had a gray sky bg.  As soon as I post this, I'm going back out and move the blind a bit closer for a session this afternoon.

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600mm, tripod and ball head, f/13, 1/400, iso 500, aperture priority, pattern metering, +2/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped from a horizontal to a 7.7 MP 4x5 vertical.  Taken December 24th at 1:40 PM.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Dennis,

A nice Xmas present that nature threw your way.  Coming in a little closer will help with getting more detail that gets lost through cropping.  Pose is nice and the kestrel is framed  adequately.  Well done and Merry Christmas........................Jim

Good one Dennis!  I actually like the BG as it is.  Shows off the kestrel very well IMHO.  Fine detail and color, also like the pose.  You are getting great images with that lens and of course your skill!  Thanks for sharing.

Dennis, you've got fine details in the fluffed up bird.  I'm assuming that it's chilly there in WA.  I don't see the grey background as a problem and there's enough light for a good eye highlight.

This is certainly a lot more interesting than the finches that have been coming to your house.  Of the two Kestrel images you have posted, I think I prefer the other one however, I would be more than happy to get an image like this.  Looks good to me.  It would be nice to have some son here in the Pacific Northwest.  We do see the occasional sucker hole but it has been a frustrating winter with respect to light conditions for avian photography and anything else for that matter.

Dennis, you know my interest sweet spot in the avian world. Hummingbirds, Osprey, and now a Kestrel are all at the top of my favorite list in the avian arena.

This guy is beautiful. The perch spot is perfect too for this size bird for pleasant photo opportunities. As the fog dampened the viewing a bit would a possible boost in contrast help maybe? Just a thought and not a nit at all, the image is wonderful.......laugh
