Parrots and Parakeets

This is one from the Amazonian portion of Ecuador a couple of years ago that I wanted to share.  I was purposely trying to get the wing blur of the Orange-cheeked Parrots as I had seen they produce a rainbow when photographed in flight at a slow shutter speed (also it is so dark in this area getting a sharp flight shot with decent quality would be impossible) while at the same time showing some sharp birds on the ground.  To accomplish this the lens needs to be fixed in one spot and not panning.

Canon 7D 500F4 1/40 F5.6, iso 800, Av mode, evaluative metering -1.3, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley head.

Although its been a few years, I remember this area vividly. When we arrived there was not a single bird in sight, but 15 minutes later there were hundreds of parakeets and a just a few parrots drinking in the small pools of cave water. A spectacle for certain, but extremely challenging to photograph.

Excellent photo Nate! Love the motion blur effect you captured here.

The flying birds with the lovely blurred wings definitely make this image, Nate.  The birds in the water add the needed context.  Well done.  I'll bet you're plotting on how to get a frame filler of one in flight.

I like the color.  I don't think I've ever seen so many Parrots in one place at one time.

A very creative image, Nate !  The flying birds seem like strange apparitions looming over the flock in some ancient cave.  I like the effect enormously.

Hello Nate, Quite a unique capture with the intentional slow shutter. Has a sureal look about it. Giving up some sharpness while using slow shutter has accompished a "Cool Capture"
