Boabab trees

I took this picture of Baobab trees at sunrise at Kubu Island in the Makgadikgadi salt pan in Botswana, Africa. As you can see the sky was a bit hazy, creating very soft morning light in sharp contrast with the hard light that you normally have in these desert areas. I was inspired by the 'atmosphere' in the landscape at that moment.

Interesting and unique image, Chris. I can't recall ever seeing this unusual looking trees before. I like the subject and the comp a lot, and the nice light. My only question is on the tone or color. The yellow-green cast on the trees and ground seems strong to me. While I can't say what how it actually was at the time, that's just my impression looking at your image.

Chris, this an amazing scene. The starkness and remote feel is otherworldly to say the lest. I've done a lot of desert shots and have witnessed odd atmospheres too. Can't say I've seen this cast, but many purple and or magenta colors off and on. I like it as it's presented, but could see some toning down of the yellow for another look and feel too. But, totally subjective and personal tastes on that point. The images is wonderful as is.......laugh

This is a pretty cool image. These trees have so much character and together with that sky, you have a winner. I suspect this would also make a great b&w image, Regarding the warm tones. The oranges are fine and the yellows are mostly ok, it's the yellow grass that's off. It's the color of yellow flowers rather than straw. So a minor color adjustment should do the trick.

Chris,

This is fascinating and quite unique.  Folks have made some good comments - and one of those Igor mentioned, is "character."  These trees are quite literally characters; anthropomorphic, to be more specific.  Also, you've got a great and complimentary sky going on.

I understand the light and atmosphere can and does create different and beautiful light.  I would agree with other comments though that the yellow on the landscape is pretty yellow - rather than goldish.  But of course we weren't there and as always it's always subjective and completely up to the photographer as to how they want to convey their image.

It's very striking.

Nice to see some medium format digichromes. I still use my ancient Hassel-Bad 500CM with a digi back. Very satisfying to work the old way, advancing the digits with a crank.

The only compositional change might have been a little more foreground and a little less sky?  Just a personal preference. As to color, I think it is great to attempt to capture the world as it is rather than force some idea of our ideas of perfection via photoshop.

Great capture of an unusual and rewarding subject!

These trees do ooz personality, similar to the bristlecone pines out west.  I was wondering, like some of the others, if the trees do have this yellowish tone or is a result of the strong low angle lighting.  Very interesting view of this area.

Chris, I have to agree with the other comments regarding the color--this seems too yellow to me. I also agree a little more foreground would balance this out a little better. The trees are wonderful, and the sky looks really nice.

Hi Chris... love this comp, as stated I think it's a bit yellow especially in the ground and sky. No other suggestions for me

chris - i like this - it is a place i've been hankering to go for a long time (one of my colleagues studies lions in the makgadikgadi pans a few years ago).  the warmth of the light is something that i can relate to.

Love the contrast between the warm trees and earth with the cool tones of the sky. Nicely done!

Hi Chris,

Pretty interesting shot. The yellow is toned down a bit in the larger image.  You could play around with the yellows a tad to see whether it enhances the mood.  Otherwise, well worth getting up early to nail this scene.........................Jim

Amazing trees and sky, and great colours - tough to get with the harsh light typical of Africa.
Congrats on a very fine WP!

Great take on this scene! I can't wait to visit it for the first time next year (despite living within 700km of it)
