Desert Vagaries

I woke one fine morning to a fog enshrouded desert. After a considerable amount of fruitless walking I came across this subject towards the end. Worried about the lifting fog I worked quickly to capture the amount of murkiness I thought would be optimal. As I shot this image I thought I had a decent image but after seeing it on the big screen I decided it was less so. A year went by. The file was neglected and almost lost, until 2 days ago it reappeared. Now, looking at it again, I remembered what first drew me to this subject.

What do you think?

The mist adds a fine sense of mystery to this great desert view, Igor.  I like your focus on the clump of Yucca with all the different ages.  The subtle ridgeline adds nicely to the sense of depth.  I do think that a bit more space above the Yucca bloom stalk would be good.

I think it is a wonderful image that should not have been hid away for a year. I like the mood the fog gives and provides me with a tranquil somber mood. The soft lighting adds dimesion.

Love it. The subtle coloring is amazing and the separation of the BG elements created by the fog adds depth. I'm always going back through my files trying to rediscover images.

OMG Igor, this is quietly spectacular.  Sure glad you found this - or it found you from your archives.  First, I will say why I love this. It is because this has a quality to it that makes me imagine a very fine and details sketch with colored pencils, which not to say this is painterly either - this just has some quality of light and detail that I'm truly enjoying.  No doubt the fog has much to do with that and your capture was timely.

I'm hard pressed to offer any nits or suggestions, but would agree with Mark about a skosh more room up top, but that's not an image killer for me.  and wishful thinking might want to see the pole in the UL disappear; but then again the foggy atmosphere mitigates that quite a bit.

Well done. Love this Igor.

Lon

edit, oh, and the cyan in the foggy atmosphere, I forgot to mention but was just reminded.

Not sure why you neglected this, but I am glad you found it again, Igor. The fog provides some wonderful atmospherics to this desert scene; in fact I do not recall seeing a desert scene with fog before. I too wish for a bit more room at the top and maybe a little bit of cyan reduction in the fog. This is beautifully done.

Stunning image all around, Igor. I really like this being a mostly desert shooter myself. Quite the assorted collection of desert plants in a small area too. Wonderful.....

Both beautiful and unique, Igor. Just don't see many images of desert fog. And I love the assortment of attractive desert flora. devil

Just a superb desert flora image! Only thing I might notice is a little cyan in the mist. But it doesn't bother me a bit.

I can't believe you sat on this for a year.  This is excellent, Igor. The fog is a bit blue, but I think it adds to the mood. Maybe one of my favorites from you.  Just beautiful.

Maybe it's the fog, or maybe it's the unusual plants, but this seems quite magical.

This is intriguing, Igor.  I would assume that fog in the desert is a rarity so it definitely  captures my interest.  I like the way that you have arranged the vegetation in the composition and of course the fog helped create some separation between the foreground  and background  vegetation.  Very nicely done.

This image was shot in the central baja peninsular desert where morning fog is not uncommon during the late winter to early spring months. Although a very arid area this air moisture has some delightful benefits. A hilly area, the predominantly cinnamon colored rocks here are have fascinating designs from many species of lichens that depend on the fog. I'm always looking for rocks to bring back to my garden. To get here you need to drive about 400 miles south of the US border.

I think this is absolutely gorgeous and am happy that you reconsidered. This area of Baja is just amazing - is this close to, or along the road to Bahía de los Ángeles? I always remember that area as an absolute wonderland, your image reflects its beauty very well. Would I like to see the top of the Boojum in the foreground? Perhaps, but it also works like this.

  • Igor: A great capture of the moment and for me a compelling result. The larger version shows so much disparate detail and texture and the atmospehrics really add to the mood. Most excellent.>=))>

This is quite lovely, Igor. My only nit is the cactus trunk directly behind foreground Agave. I know there is not much you could have done about it, though. I love the misty light, and the color and contrast look perfect. Well done!

That's an interesting point, Preston. The cirio behind the yucca stalk that you mention is actually fairly close and darker in the original. My first thought was to clone it out, which I did. Then I came up with the idea that I would brighten it to make it look more distant and fog enshrouded with Nik software. I compared the two versions and decided that it would look better with the foggy cirio than with a blank sky. I just thought the ore complex subject was better than the simpler.

Alberto, you got it exactly right. This is on the road to Bahia of Los Angeles, about 8 miles after the turnoff from the highway. You take the dirt road to Tinaja de Yubay from the highway to BOLA. It's a pretty area with any boulder covered hills which can be seen through the mist.

Wow, this is superb, Igor. Portfolio quality for sure. Wonderful collection of shapes and textures and the fog does a beautiful job in simplifying the composition. Processing looks spot-on. Great work.

Nothing quite like foggy moody abstracts. This is really dreamy and I love the pastel colors. Well caught, Igor!

Very mesmerizing image, and exceptional in the desert fog which seems a rare ocurrance.
wonderful combination of elements here, perfectly placed and captured.
