Union River

This is a picture I made on the Union River in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area of Upper MI. on my recent trip up there which was the end of September. I pretty much had rain for 3 days which I don't mind but we also had lots of wind and I wanted to avoid that if I could. I went for a hike along the Union River and found an area where the wind was much less at times. I was able to make this shot in a light misty rain before the heavy rain started in again. Best as usual in the larger version.

Cool perspective! I like the way the river fades off to the back, surrounded by a beautiful blast of green. Real nice!

Great experience of the flow to me, Nick. I also enjoy to explore all the details of the surroundings.

Love the saturated colors, esp, the lush greens and the rushing water leading us through the scene.

Boy, I really like this one Nick (and I'm not just saying that because of the nice things you say about my recent work). You have worked with this idea for quite some time, but this one ranks up there IMO. I think it's because it makes you feel being carried down this river into that distant opening. Instead of adding fg rocks and swirls for interest there is this a powerful continuity. The yellow leaves on the bank add a nice touch and interest to what otherwise would be the weakest part of the comp. Water looks excellent, but you've had a lot of practice with that. Lol. The only thing I would change is minor but significant, to me. That light wooded area in center left is distracting in a confusing way so I would darken that. Very fine image indeed.

Nick, your selection of shutter speed is tasteful.  The diagonal then curved flow is nice too, accentuated by the angles of the right side tree limbs.

A vibrant image that jumps out at the viewer...nice work balancing the highlights, the greens and the darker woodland shadows...liking the light riding down the right side of the image along the moss...that yellow leaf is lovely and seems suspended in the lower frame. Lots to enjoy here. Certainly one of the finest presentations of this type of stream and deep woodland image I have seen in a while.  Wonderful image, Nick.

Very dramatic Nick, and excellent job of handling the shadows and light.  The water texture is absolutely perfect, which is becoming a trademark for your images.  This is very enjoyable!

This downstream perspective, with the river receeding into the distance, works well, Nick. I also like the textures in the foreground water. Well captured.

Wow, Nick! This image really pulls me in...like I can almost physically feel it. I like that there is a stretch of calmer water lower left before you get to the whitewater section, it gives a little breathing room at the corner. I could see burning down the area Igor mentions, but other than that, it's perfect. As everyone else said, the shutter speed is exactly right. Great capture!

Thanks to all of you for your comments on this. I have and always will appreciate those who take time to give their thoughts and suggestions.
Igor and Craig, I can see that now as well. I'll try darkening that area a bit and see what I think before making any prints. In a print it might need to stay more like it is here, but in a web version just as you suggested is probably best. Thanks guys! Nick

I new this was your before I looked at the name. You have your own style and you really capture your part of the world extremely well. I like the depth and feeling of this image. Everything moves the eye right into the picture.

What I find so remarkable in your image, Nick, is the feeling of being swept away by the current straight down that tunnel of green. Love your composition. Wonderful color and the perfect shutter speed for the water.  The single yellow leaf in the foreground really adds to the whole feel of your image.

This is gorgeous, Nick. I love the way the river draws me into this lovely scene and I particularly like the water action in the LLC. I thought this was yours even before seeing your name as it seemed to be your style. Great work.
