Breaking Bad

This area of salt flats, near Badwater in Death Valley, looked like waves to me. The storm clouds helped the illusion of stormy seas. D600, Nikon 14-24 @ 14, 1/80, f20, iso 200. May, 2016. Suggestions, questions and other comments welcome.

Scott: Love this POV and there is just the right amount of sky for my tastes. On our only visit to Death Valley about this time last year there had been heavy rains and this part of the park was inaccessible. This makes me want to go back. Nicely done. >=))>

Hi Scott,  the affect is the sense of hardship and inaccessibility from here to there. Knarly, dreadful, and rough.  The distant sky and beauty is a stark contrast to the foreground.  So for a story-image this rocks!

For an image that makes me feel out-of-sorts, it succeeds.  But, as it evokes emotions I try to avoid, this is not something that I would print and hang on the wall.

I don't know what you do with this comment.

Hi Scott, an impressive landscape with lots of atmosphere! I could imagine a strong B/W conversion would also be very interesting (though not necessarily any better! enlightened) Must have been great just to be there!

Thanks for the comment and suggestion, Mark. I do have a B&W version already prepared, and I debated on which to post. I personally prefer the B&W, but I thought that maybe the color was better to post for viewing here.

Have you considered converting this to b&w? There is a lot of good texture there and the composition is quite good. The color isn't very appealing or uplifting but a b&w image may give this a more dramatic sense and hid the dreariness of the browns. Just a thought. This is the sort of image that Gary Phillips does quite well with.

Scott, What an interesting scene you captured here. It is quite a view full of structure and texture. The distant mountains and amazing clouds made the perfect background for this. I like how you photographed it. I will look forward to seeing your black and white version when you post it...if you do. Cheers!

That's a nasty looking foreground, Scott.  Yes, the rugged mountains and the sky add well to the sense of storminess.  Definitely not the usual "I sure wish I was here" view, but very interesting in it's own right, creating a strong emotion.
