Lion Land

A male Lion follows a lioness that I left out of the frame on purpose to capture this big cat in an iconic setting. This was a mating couple from the Cheli Pride in the Mara North Conservancy. The Mara North has an incredible amount of lions and it is quite common to see 45 to 50 different individuals on average on any of our 6 day photo tours in this conservancy. We have had weeks with over 70 lions . . . impressive numbers IMO

Love everything about this, Mario; the tree placement, lion, brooding, threatening sky, the comp, the wonderful warm toned grasses.  Excellent

Very, very appealing.  You've captured some wonderful elements that all mesh together so nicely, and the added lion just puts it over the top.

Mario: Awe inspiring scene and a fantastic capture. While its a very small point I think I would make the small dark spot (tree top?) on the horizon between the lion and the frame edge go away. >=))>

This would be an outstanding landscape without the lions, with the great shape of the lone tree, the terrific colors in the sky and the warm swatch of grass.  The lion is icing on the cake.

I clicked this to see the special light and was transported to a special place seeing the tree.  Never expecting to see a lion ...wow!

This is a nice minimalist landscape image...that has a lion in it. I like the work very much. But I think there is too much sky in this photo. The grassland, the sliver of water, the pastel coloring of the lower sky, and of course that great tree are elements that complement, support and balance each other in the image beautifully. The top third of the image, where the darker clouds lie, provides an ominous and confusing tone to the image.  Maybe, I just want to see more of the king of beasts in the idyllic landscape you captured rather than seeing him so small and burdened down by those heavy clouds.  Either way a very fine and interesting image,  Mario. Hope to have more lion sightings.

Hi Mario, wonderful shot - I think that pulling in so much of the sky was the right way to go - brings a real sense of scale to the image which is otherwise so difficult to capture - When you were there it must have felt so expansive, the small lion and tree both of which we know are 'large' objects, real helps with this - somehow the sense of 'foreboding' in the image I find very interesting - Wonderful shot! (Only one very very minor point - I would be tempted to clone out the small dark spot on the right horizon)...

This is excellent! I think a slight crop from the top just below your logo is something to consider, but the image certainly works well as it is. I love the color contrast between warm and cool. There is a sort of 'lonesomeness' to this that I find very appealing.

A beautiful shot, Mario! The composition and color palette are fantastic, and that lion just makes it even better! I like showing the expanse of clouds you chose, but I might burn down those two lighter areas at the upper left edge. I also agree about cloning out the dark spot near the horizon.

Wonderful quality of light  Mario.  I love the ominous sky and of course the lion.
