Praying Mantis (C)

Well, sort of captive.  She hitched a ride on my pants when I was out working on a local preserve a couple of days ago, so I brought her home to photograph.  I chilled her a bit to help her stay where I put her and did the photography this morning while it was still pretty cool out.  After I was done, I put her in one of our gardens.  Of the three "perches" I tried, this was my favorite.

5DIII, 180 mm f/3.5L  macro, tripod and cable release, f/16, 1/10, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering, +1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to a 4x5 format of 17.5 MP before resizing.  Taken this morning at 6:45 AM with fog filtered sun.

Comments and criticisms are really appreciated.

Thanks,

Really nice, Dennis. Great detail in the mantis and the plant with a complimentary blurred background. Very well done!

You picked a fine perch for this mantis, Dennis.  The aging fern matches both her color and the background colors very well.  I also like the angled body.  Did you do that or did she?

Mark asked about the position of the mantis' body.  I just put her on the fern.  She chose her own pose, though I admit to being pleased with her choice.  sad

This worked out really well. I like the color contrast and form contrast between the leaves and the Praying Mantis. Terrific background.
