Sunset Short Eared

This one's from our trip to BC last year. The short eared was very cooperative and seemed at ease. He would stay perched looking all around the field, and every once in a while would take a flight and catch a vole. He would then perch near us again and start looking for more prey. He let us photograph him for hours. It was an amazing experience, especially since short eared's are one of my favourite owls. I can't wait to go back next year!

Thanks for lookin'! crying

This is a great image of the owl in it's habitat, Jenaya. The large version is very good and has details which the smaller one doesn't show well. I am little on the fence with your logo which seems to compete for my attention.

HI Jenaya
Owls are just so cool.  Good job with lighting and detail.

Very nice job with the lighting and detail on this one. While I really like the image, if there was a way to perhaps get another half stop of light on the owl itself with some warmth to it, I would try that to see what it looks like. Just a thought. This is a very nice image as is.

And it even chose an extremely photogenic perch, Jenaya.  A lovely image and you framed it perfectly for my taste.  Excellent job on handling the bright sky bg and still getting nice exposure on the owl.  Well done.

I really like you comp on this on Jenaya. I do wish you had adjusted your exposure on the subject a bit more even if that sacrificed the light BG a little. If mine, I might try to pull out a bit more exposure and detail in the foreground and subject and then warm up the mid-tones a tiny little bit.

Nice one, Jenaya. If it were mine, and you had all that time, I'd have tried spot metering on the owl's head. It might have mde the background a little brighter than you'd like, but it also might have gotten you a brighter exposure on the back lit bird.

My wife and I participated in a Short-eared Owl study here in Idaho this spring and never got viws as good as you've captured here. Well done.
