A female Red-naped Sapsucker taken on our recent trip to the southern part of Saskatchewan.

Nikon D810, 300 2.8 lens, 1.4 tc, ISO 800, f 6.3, 1/200 HH

She was circling the tree checking out her holes to, I assume, see if the sap had captured any insects.I am a little surprised how well this turned out considering the conditions.  Please check out larger image.

Thanks for looking and critiques always appreciated.

Quite good May, up to your usual standards. Also, I appreciate your observations on the birds actions. One of the things I see in most close-up woodpecker shots is present here also. One is almost obligated to a portrait shot to include half a tree trunk and the vertical body of the woodpecker. Not that it is a problem, especially with your excellent image, but it is a limitation.

Wonderful job hand holding this one, May.  The detail in the Sapsucker is perfect.  I wish the tree weren't so bright, but that's where she was operating and I don't think it would look natural dimmed down.

A classic woodpecker pose and that is typical of their behavior.  This one has nice color.  You have done well with the BW details.

Very nice May. I wouldn't have known the conditions were not good here, which means you handled it perfectly. Nice work!
