Cloudy Zion

I really enjoyed the dramatic skies we got a couple months back when we visited Zion. My wife and I took a little hike down the Valley from the Lodge along the Virgin River. Lucky to get both sunshine and rain along the way. Canon 40D, f18, 1/200 sec, iso 500, -0.7 exp bias, 24 mm (24-105 ISL) Beanbag on a Rock. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Nice view of this icon, Ed. I'd suggest cropping in from the left a bit to eliminate the partial tree on the left edge of the frame, and perhaps darkening the sky more so that the rock face stands out. Certainly a wonderful ominous scene :)

Nicely composed grand Zion landscape, Ed. Nothing like Zion. I think Sairam's suggestion about darkening the sky for even more drama is a good one and worth trying, but this looks good to me as is.

Ed: most impressive when viewed large. I like using the river as a leading line to the mountain. I think the dehaze tool in LR might be able to bring up the contrast just a bit in the mountain. Excellent otherwise. Richard

Ed, the mix of sunlight and shadow on the land looks good as it shows the colors in the rocks very well.  The ominous sky is a good change of pace for Zion.  The tree, lower left, doesn't bother me and your comp. has good balance as presented.  The curve of the river and the dark clouds, upper left, create a fine arching eye movement through the view.

You were blessed with a very nice sky, Ed.  I like the comp with the river bend leading into the canyon.  There is a bright spot along the left edge roughly half way up that I would clone, but that's being pretty picky.

Nice scene with the curving virgin River and towers.  I agree with the suggestions about darkening the sky and increasing the contrast in the rock towers.  A possibility may have been to move to the right some to move the trees left and expose more of the river bend.  The band of shade helps to nicely separate the sunlit peaks and river.

Hi Ed,

This a cool look at Zion, and the clouds up top really compliment the image nicely. I like the idea of trying to add a bit more contrast to this image to really make it pop and to add a bit more drama. Zion is just a rocking cool place, and this image shows off how awesome this place is.

Love the comp with the stream leading us in and the diaganols throughout. The partial tree doesn't bother me. Probably too hard to cop it out anyway. I might darken the sky a tad as others have suggested.devil

Ed, This is a wonderful view from Zion. I think your comp works very nice and the image has such a nice feel. If anything I can see darkening the sky as mentioned but I like it as is. Nice work!
