Roseate Spoonbill

To my amusement, this fellow worked for some time to get the branch he was standing on.  Eventually he gave up.  Taken about this time last year at the Live Oak Nursery ponds near Delcambre, Louisiana.  This spoonie was not as deeply colored as most nesting at this site.

D7200, tripod
1/4000, f/6.3
ISO 500
T150-600mm @ 450mm
Cropped to 67% of the frame.
LR6, levels and minor sharpening.

Nice pose, color, and detail.  I like how the bird stands out from the background.

The full size version is a must - the colors, textures and detail are stunning. I also like the light that you got. Beautiful, Raoul.

It is great you the spoonie in the open with the habitat, Raoul. The wing position and lighting are very complementary. The head angle and composition are also excellent.

Wonderful lighting. Flash?

Thanks to all for the kind comments on this shot.  I will post another Spoonbill shot soon that shows the extreme coloration of many of the birds at this site.

Robert--no flash used on this, or any, of my shots.  I try to pick birds in a pocket of light, and then I spot meter on the lighter tonal values which substantially darkens the shaded background.  I like the luminous effect this provides.

You've done a real nice job of isolating the spoonbill from the background which is rather cluttered. As a result, the picture really works quite well. Really nice detail and pose.

It always amazes me what big sticks birds will try to haul to a nest and some of the silly things they do when they get them there.  I like the lighting in this image, Raoul.  The Spoonbill really pops.  Nice pose that illustrates what it's doing as well.
