For once, the sky in the bg works well, Robert. I really like the way it frames the bird. This isn't a Goldfinch (the beak is completely different). The beak looks to me like a female Summer Tanager which does extend into southern California and has occurred periodically all the way up into Oregon according to the range map I'm looking at. However the wing bars that are slightly visible fit the Western Tanager which is more likely in terms of normal range. Nice image.

I think this is a female Western Tanager? Overall a pleasing image. The background sky works OK. As presented, the bird is very centered. I'd look at a different crop to move the bird out of the middle of the frame, favoring less room on the left since the bird is looking to right.

Robert, I also believe this to be a female western tanager. I like viewing the bird with that light blue background. Very nice pose and good exposure. I agree with Keith that this image might be more effective if the bird were placed more toward the left side of the frame. Overall, very nice image. I sometimes go to Gray Lodge - nice place for bird photography.

Female Western Tanager. Note the beak size, shape, and color.

Yes, sometimes these IDs are difficult. Lots of clues though. It does take time to learn some of the basics and before long you get quite good at it. Not to worry. With a few exceptions you did all a lot of good things. The image is sharp. The color is balanced.
You had difficult lighting situation and you made the most of it.
