Woodland Spring

by Ian Wolfenden

Gallery: LandscapePosted May 22, 2016167 views10 comments
A spring scene in an area of wet woodland, with sweet flag thriving in a muddy pool, overlooked by hawthorn blossom amid a variety of trees;  the fallen tree is typical of this sometimes flooded environment.

Gorgeous scene! The greens look great. At first I was a bit on the fence about the in your face branch in the urc, but I ended up really liking it. It really gives the feeling of finding one of those small hidden spots in the woods, just like this one. Nice!

Sure looks luscious, green, and inviting, Ian.  I'm fascinated with how the greens are quite similar with the shapes and shadows creating the differentiation between areas.  I also like how the downed tree is inviting me to step over and go exploring.

Very nicely done, Ian. The lush greens are a very inviting part of this woodland scene and the large version is a real treat with all the wonderful details. This is just my personal opinion, but I think this would also work with those four lighter sticks in the LLC cloned out.

Ian, I find these kind of scenes very difficult to compose because they tend to be a bit chaotic and I have a hard time finding a cohesive composition.  This looks like a peaceful place and you have conveyed that nicely here.  I do like how you have used the darker green leaves in the foreground as a contrasting element with the background.

A real nice lush green detailed scene. I am with about the sticks. It was my first thought when viewing it. Your comp works well in what could easily be a very chaotic image.

I also find these kind of scenes hard to compose to make sense out of the mess. I was not sure of this one at first. The more I looked I appreciate your composition. Two reasons the framing from the log and the two tree trunks on either side and the group of vertical plants that gives my eye a place to focus. Well done.

I'm really enjoying this Ian.  You took a rather chaotic scene and brought structure to it wih a well thought out and well crafted composition.  A beautiful scene featuring "real" nature.

I love this look through the branches, Ian.  I agree with cloning the bright sticks bottom left and I might entertain doing the same with  the broken y mid frame right.  Excellent with or without the cloning.

"Once more unto the breach" of chaotic woodland scenes, eh, Ian enlightened

I much prefer this one compositionally over your previous submission. The four-sided frame naturally leads my eye to the reeds in the water which stand out as a point of focus for my attention. The limited palette has me looking at the huge variety of shapes in the woodland. The suggested clonings did not bother me until they were pointed out so I'd probably just leave well enough alone.

Nice work!

Lovely mix of green Ian. These chaotic scenes are oh so hard to capture; well done. I too would probably darken or clone the llc sticks, but it's a nit.
