Frozen in time

.... well, not really. Couldn't think of a better title. Certainly this is temporary and won't remain frozen in time...

Thanks so much for the comments on my last image.  Simple indeed.  This one is pretty simple too.  I'm curious about a couple things. I did quite a bit to tame the highlights, but wondering overall if this is too dark? Also, is little bare tree/bush enough to hold interest? the log encased in the ice?

Another image from Jan '15 in Yosemite along the Merced with the 4x5. One of the last images with my camera, which I no longer possess.... ;-(  Don't have the lens of settings handy.

Thanks for any comment, critique or suggestions!

Lon

Love the golden light Lon.  Just wish there was a bit more back light behind little tree to make it stand out more.  I think you tamed the highlights very well in the overall scene.

This is a wonderfully creative image Lon. The simple color palette together with those delicate tones provides a very pleasing composition. I feel that the branch actually does have a lot of 'presence' but it's being stolen by the highlights behind it. If I crop removing some of the top the image comes more alive for me. So I would either do the crop or bring the top highlights down still further. But generally I like this very much and there is a great and unique image in here.

I think the fact that the branch being so little actually adds some "fragility" to the scene, which is an important aspect in nature of course. The bigger piece of wood in front of it is dead, but the little branch is still staying strong. Tells a nice story. The darker rendering works very well for me, and the golden glow is sweet.

Lon,
Interesting, simple composition. To me the interplay between the curved frozen stick and the upright branch is the center of interest. I agree with Igor that cropping a bit off the top would bring more focus to these elements and reduce the amount of negative space. This is purely a matter of personal taste but I think the warm tones could be nudged up a bit in sat.

Real nice almost abstract image, Lon. I agree with Dave about experimenting with warming it up a bit, but very nicely done.

If you ever get to jonesing for 4x5, you can always shake the dust off mine and borrow it. :)

I agree with Harley's comment about warming it up just a bit. I think the framing is just fine. That vertical branch is the star of the show for me.

Same here, Lon. cool

Exquisite image, Lon.  The tender looking tree emerging from the ice really speaks volumes of the fragile, tenuous existence some   live through, be it trees or people.  People complain that I read too much into an image at times, but that is what struck me when I first saw your image.  Love that golden light reflecting on the ice and the wonderful designs in the ice beckoning the eye to explore.

I have to apologize, Lon, for being absent from NPN for quite some time for me.  I check in from time to time, but have been in different state of mind lately.  I always appreciate your thoughtful and very helpful comments.  This image speaks loudly to the sensitive nature of your eye and the nuanced nature of your art.  I applaud both. Your images  are as thoughtful as your comments and are very much appreciated by all who view and receive them. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your comments on this one, I truly appreciate them.  I struggled with the color, so I appreciate the suggestions.  There are crop potentials too.  Not sure if this one will ever see print though.

Harley and Preston - appreciate the offer of being able to take the ole' Chamonix out for a spin.  Does that mean you'll supply the film and processing too?  enlightened

@Gary - thank you so much for your kind words.  No need to apologize to me for anything.  I understand totally, I'm still having a hard time making time and motivation for photography.  I need another road trip!

Thanks for taking the time to come back and post your comments!

I like the golden light and the simplicity of the scene. It's very interesting to see the details of what it looks to be a fragile ice as well as the branch going out of the water. Nice work.
