Ice star/Sun star
by Wayne Jones
With overnight temperatures around 20 degrees F. vernal pools have been developing large ice crystal patterns. Even when daytime temperatures get well above freezing, the ice remains intact in the shade of the forest. I enjoy looking at the patterns, but I had a terrible time finding a focal point for a composition. Then a spot of late afternoon sunlight found it's way through the pines, and made my job easy. The Sun lit up the leaves on the bottom of the pool, making a nice contrast to the reflection of the sky on the thin layer of ice.

10 commentsI know I can't remember every image posted here, but I can't recall ever seeing a sun-star off a reflection like this. This is AWESOME! Kudos to you for seeing this. and like your title suggests, you literally have two stars here. The lines, angles and crisp shapes in the ice are wonderful enough. The reflected sunstar is a terrific focal point. Add to this the mix of warm and cool tones.... you've got a winner here.
Fabulous image!
