Teton Dance

The light dances with the clouds in Grand Teton National Park. I was up at Grand View Point for about four hours capturing ever changing conditions in the atmosphere. This image represents something very spiritual for myself, and I am very much drawn this image. It is going to be included in my upcoming black and white show, and I would very much enjoy any thoughts y'all have on this capture.

Thank you for making some time to have a look. cool

Ryan,
This is very nice. The patterns in the rain/mist obscuring the mountains is fantastic and too me the most compelling portion of the image. I would be tempted to play around with reducing the exposure in the top half of the image. For my taste I find a bit too bright for the rest of the image.

That is quite a show! Amazing shot, really like those streaks of rain with the pattern of light in them and the backdrop of vague mountains. The "cheery" cumulus clouds on top of that are quite a contrast, and that is something I really like with this photo.

A very dramatic, creative image.  I love the clouds hovering over the mountains with the light and churning patterns, then moving into the sharp tree line below. Excellent!

I concur with everything that Dave Dillemuth stated. The best part of the image is in the bottom 2/3rds and the clouds are drawing the eye away from it. I would drop the highlights in those clouds so that the two portions work together. The dark band at the bottom really works well with the god rays descending toward it. This part of image is rock solid in concept and processing. The round dark cloud on the left draws too much attention as well because it's on it's own. I believe I read somewhere that round objects are eye magnets and should be avoided unless you specifically want the viewer it's a point of focus.

Ryan,

You're going to have one hell of a show!  Thank you for sharing all these with us.  This one fits perfectly in your selection of images, and each one of them clearly able to stand alone.  This is fantastic!

The light streaking through the mist, rain squall, whatever is happening is just glorious. The bit of land and treeline at the bottom provide just enough to anchor the scene.

I'm guessing you're already printing and prepping for the show?  If not, would you consider a slight crop from the top? For me, and just my preference, I'd like to see a skosh less sky and clouds since for me the main storyline is the light/rain mood and atmosphere in the center of the frame.  So I'm thinking a small crop to remove about 1/2 the open sky in upper right. That also takes out some of the brightest spots in the upper clouds on the left.  I think I'm talking about less than a 5% or less from the top. Minor, just thought I'd toss that out there.

What trip to Wyoming!

Lon

Killer sky and lighting.  I would agree with others that a little crop off the top along maybe with a little more on the bottom would create more balance for me.  I can see why this is spiritual for you, visions from above.  Good luck with the show.

Nice "atmospherics" with Moran and Leigh Canyon hiding behind. You feel for Black and White is really coming along nicely!

All my best:  Tom

The atmosphere is outstanding, Ryan. I tend to agree with others about cropping some of the sky. I would not have minded more land as well, but I think cropping from the top will make up for it.

This is a beauty. I echo what others have said about cropping out some of the sky.

Ryan, This is a wonderful b&w image. I love the conditions you caught here and also like the processing very much. Should be another very nice addition to yor B&W show. I agree with others on the crop suggestion and just a bit more on the bottom might be nice, but still it works fine as you have it here too. Really nice work on these b&w images lately. I would love seeing the prints!

Best wishes with the show! Nick

You have definitely captured some very special lighting conditions here at the Grand Tetons.  An amazing place to spend a lot of time especially when conditions are always changing and your images can always be different and convey different feelings. This is a beautiful photo. Thanks for sharing.

Another beauty for your show. Great mood and light!!  I would also favor a crop off the top, but still looks great as presented.

This is terrific. I love how phantom and ethereal like the atmosphere seems.

This is really an amazing picture. I agree with pretty much all other comments. I see some pretty strong halos along the tree lines in the bottom. The little bit of water is really bright. You might consider burning it some.

I can see why this is spiritual for you.

Excellent work handling the highlights, and very dramatic. I also think a crop off the top would work well.
