Sandhill Cranes

We were checking out a cove on Lake Eufaula, hoping to photograph some ducks.  Suddenly, there before us stood about 12 Sandhill Cranes.  When they flew, they went right over our heads and we were clicking away.
FYI: The earliest Sandhill Crane fossil, estimated to be 2.5 million years old, was unearthed in the Macasphalt Shell Pit in Florida.

This one jumps off the page at thumbnail view, Elizabeth! It's a very compelling shot and at first glance has incredible tones and contrast. Upon closer inspection, unfortunately, it looks like you've possibly introduced some issues in post, resulting in light/soft halos around the cranes and some "blotchiness" to the colours, which appear very oversaturated to my eye. Don't get me wrong, the overall effect is actually quite beautiful, but in terms strictly related to image quality, takes this down a peg or two. As photo art, though, it's very striking.

I've only seen these on the ground  at the now even more famous Malheur NWR and never in flight.  As John said the enlarged image has some issues but I did look at and enjoy you photo art interpretation.

Wonderful shot, clear focus and excellent composition.  Only nit is I'dd like a little more space above and/or below the birds so it would seem less cramped by the big guys.  Lucky you to see them in the flesh!
