This is the same Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) singing from the trees in our Montana yard that was in an earlier post (here) but on a different day, from a different tree, and catching more direct late afternoon sun.  I'm sure hoping this guy makes it back this spring, so I can work on getting closer.  (5D3, 400mm f5.6 + 1.4 TC, 1/800s, f/10, iso 1600, tripod)

Hi  Markcrying     love  the singing  pose  .frownblushfrown   but  with  serious glass... a  400mm  +1.4 tele..=560mm...   i thought  you could  get a larger  image of  the bird.. i guess  there must be a problem  getting  close.    A pity the bird seems very shy   of people.wink

They can be very tough to get close to, Mark.  Great singing pose.

Of course if you got closer you wouldn't have the background mountains and overall lovely habitat/context to the shot that you have here. I always want closer as well, don't get me wrong, but this is a very nice shot and in many ways more memorable than the "standard" recipes IMO.

Great pose, very classic meadowlark :). As a Kansan, I enjoy this photo because it shows a different background than what we have for our meadowlarks. Nothing wrong with wider shots once in a while.
