Great Egret

I liked the lighting and reflection with this bird.  Also, I like the water ripples and the low angle.  Background isn't my favorite. Nikon D800e, 300f4, 1.4tc, f8, 1/500, ISO 400.  Sacramento Valley, California.  Comments and criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Nice pose and composition with good detail in the Egret, Jim.  You might lighten that dark swath in the bg a trifle to help balance it with the rest of the image, but in general I like the bg.  I don't know if it's an optical illusion from all the gold around it or if it's really there, but the Egret looks a bit blue to me.

It is an interesting image, reminding me of hand tinted B&W images from decades ago.

As Dennis notes the egret has a slight blue color cast. This could be neutralized selectively, or overall making the setting even more golden.

I'd like more feather detail in the egret, but if the bird was in low contrast shade then there might not have been enough contrast to pick up any texture.

Finally, there's some sort of optical illusion on the left side. There appear to be water ripples much higher in the image than I expect from the plane of the water's surface by the legs and tail of the egret.

I also like the lighting and reflection on the egret,  The white does look a little impure although I am not seeing the blue seen by Dennis,  My main concern is the beak disappears into the BG.

Thanks for your comments folks.  I have a lot of trouble picking up subtle color casts, especially blue, but I will trust you on this one and reduce the blue on the bird.  Yes, the bill does disappear somewhat in the background- one of my main problems with this one.  I will work on it.  Richard, I am glad you picked up the "optical illusion" on the left with what looks like an elevated bit of water with its own ripples.  I looked at this a long time to try to figure that out.  I think I now understand what's happening there, but it doesn't exactly help the image.  I didn't do any work over there, so that's the way it really was.  Thanks again for your helpful comments.

I keep coming back to this one, Jim! Just a beautiful, pleasing image with wonderful warm hues and a great comp. I'm also not seeing a problematic blue cast to the egret though certainly see the whites aren't neutral (which honestly fits the scene for me). I like this one A LOT. cool
