Owlshead Dawn

From a spot up in the Black Mountains looking across at the Owlshead Mountains in Death Valley. I liked the dark, ominous clouds sandwiching the pastels of the sky with the dark range below. I've actually cropped quite a bit of darker cloud from the top edge.

f/11, 1/125 sec, ISO-200, 70mm, tripod.

Good subtle contrast and colors. Not sure how much dark cloud is missing, but perhaps it could use a bit more? It works as is, too.

Dave,
This is really excellent. Really dig the layers of light and dark clouds over the rugged landscape. Lighting is beautiful. Nice to see a DV view that is not over done. Makes me want to get back to DV this winter!

Beautiful!! I love the understated colors and was a tranquil scene. Looks very painterly, too.

I agree that maybe a wee bit more of dark sky at the top could balance the dark land a bit more. But, having said that, I think this works very good as it is as well actually. Love the soft look of the sky.

Love the soft, painterly view here. This could look boring or uninspired, but there is so much going on actually. The softness is one aspect I like, but the lightning on the ridges, the layering and the earth tones add a lot to this image. Very good work!

Here's the processed image before I decided to crop off some sky. It just felt a little "heavy" to me.

Very nice light with interesting contrasts.  I think you made the correct decision to crop.  The earth tones are wonderful in the large detailed view.
