Green Heron

I like the elusive hunting techniques of these little waders, and sometimes they are hard to find and approach. Shot from a spot near Bayou Sauvage where I stop most trips there.  Original was cropped to 4x5 aspect from 3:2 format.

Bill, this is a very good shot of a green heron, both on the esthetic appeal and technical fronts. In fact, I think it would work nicely for many commercial uses.

I love the textures of the feathers and the old perch, and the lighting angle is very nice (and somewhat unique). The eye is AMAZING. If I had a nit it might be that it seems the end of the perch isn't likely far out of the frame, so a little more room all around to include that and leave space for the heron to look into might be preferable. I wondered if there was a possible processing artifact at the bottom inside edge of the perch immediately under the heron's foot? Also, and with today's varying monitor resolutions this is almost an impossible point, but the image feels just a shade oversharpened to me on my monitor, which is not a 4k nor Mac's latest and greatest, but is a solid wide-gamut IPS Dell 1920px screen.

In any event, this is a really solid image with very pleasing light and detail.

I agree with John. I see the "processing artifact", but I don't know what it is. The bird is a touch dark on my screen.

Nice species, in a pleasant set-up. The image looks a little oversharpened to me, but I must be careful since I am viewing at my laptop and for some reason sometimes images look a little different. A nice shot in any case ! Cheees, Hans

Bill: really a fine portrait and it's most impressive when viewed large. I'm also seeing what appears to be oversharpening which is more noticeable in the perch. Richard

Lovely pose and composition, Bill.  Looks like you had some great warm light.  Ditto on the mentioned nits and my monitor was calibrated yesterday.
