Quiet Sunrise

This is a picture I made a couple of years ago during a fall trip in Upper Michigan. Sunrise at Pete's Lake is always a place I enjoy being and have such nice memories from there. It is a beautiful and quiet lake in the Hiawatha National Forest about 10 miles south of Lake Superior and the town of Munising. This morning was quite special and I will always remember this as one of my favorite sunrises. When you are at such a wonderfully quiet and peaceful place it would be hard to go wrong no matter how the sunrise turned out. Thanks for looking and any thoughts. Nick

Nice work. The nice reflection in the water really lends to the calm and peacfulfeeling.enlightened

Those rich, deep clouds are spectacular.  I would like to see some more color and detail in the vegetation and with the ISO of 100 you should be able to pull it out no problem.  Nice job on the exposure too

What a beautiful morning, Nick.  I can only imagine being there which is much easier after taking a look at the large. Wow.  I really like the silhouette of the shoreline trees and reflection. It really does feel like your right there. Very nice.

A beautiful cloud mass and nice reflection, the orange highlights look like flames. The image does capture a quiet and solemn start   to the day.

This image is dripping with serenity, superb detail in the clouds, and nice contrasts Nick.

I wouldn't mind a few quiet sunrises as nice as this one.  Love the flecks of red in the grey clouds and the nearly but not quite silhouetted bank of trees in reflection.  It has a filmic look to the image which unsurprisingly I rather like.

I really enjoy the details in the clouds, but the subtle details in the trees are also great. Not too eye catching, but still preventing the trees from becoming a black blurb. The ripples in the water make for a very nice reflection too. Very nice indeed!

Nick,
Beautiful image. The detail/colors in the clouds is great. Beautiful as rendered but curious on how it would look if you pulled up some details from the shadows.

Beautiful detail on the sky, reflections and trees. The image as a whole transmits the peace of the time and place. A winner!!

I really appreciate your comments and thoughts on this. Thank you!
I could probably get some more detail and color out of the tree line but this looked much more natural to me. While I was making this picture I remember the tree line was pretty dark and I was seeing just a little color. I did bring a little more color out of the shadows already but don't think I would want to go any farther with it. As a long time film shooter I do like the thoughts that Ian had..."It has a filmic look" that made me smile..cool  Nick

Nick,

My very first impression was, that I didn't see anything "quiet" about this image!  That sky is ominous and loud; it's awesome!  The beauty comes from the brushes of color throughout, including the reflection.  Just a fantastic sunrise sky.

I have no nits what so ever.  I can see this as a print on metal... and hang it!

Thanks Lon! For some reason I had never had that feeling about an ominous sky, but now that you said that I can see it. Being there I never had that feeling for some reason, just quiet and peaceful, and it did turn out to be a beautiful day.
Funny you mentioned the metal print...I just finished getting the file ready for one because those are my exact thoughts. That is the one print I can't do here so will be sending it off tomorrow. Thanks much, Nick.

Love that sky and its reflection. I don't mind the dark tree line either.

It is a wonderfully peaceful view, Nick, that works very well as a pano.  Love those clouds and the sunlight bouncing across their bottoms.  There's also a fine sense of depth from the cloud reflections.

Beautiful! What a stunning image!! The sky immediately jumps out at me. the cloud patterns alone would be a prize. But the color to top it off is so good. It opened up nicely with the large view too. I imagine a large print of this being incredible! So many things about this that reveal themselves the longer I look. The soft mildly stretched reflections in the distant shoreline for instance.

Hi Nick,

Those clouds up top stir up some seriously strong emotions for myself. This image has a good sense of energy about it with, but there is also a sense of inner calm with the tree line and reflection in the lake.

This image truly beautiful, sweet work
