Robbie

This is Robbie, our oldest Newfoundland.  He has the indifference of a cat and prefers to get wet and stinky for good measure.  If it is cold and rainy, he will only come in after he is thoroughly soaked. After all, he is a Newfoundland and Newfies like water.  Got to love him for that!  I did this photo last Sunday and the lighting was not great and snow was falling so I decided to treat the image as a BW portrait.  K5 IIs 180mm f3.5 (1/40 sec at f8.0, ISO 500) fill flash -2ev. Brightness and contrast, Luminosity masks to darken shadows and reduce impact of lights.....................................Jim

Good portrait of the Newfoundland and an appropriate choice of B/W. I'll bet that mass of fur is hard to get the tangles out of!cool

I've been waiting for a Zablotny Newf! Robbie shows so much character and for me, is a perfect candidate for B&W. I sure like this one anyway! I've photographed a few dozen Newfs now and it's funny how some have big expressive eyes that I don't have any trouble getting light into, and others are more recessed and challenging to bounce light in past their big muzzles and heavy lids...Robbie looks like he's a little bit of the latter, but you've got just enough detail for us to get a sense of his eye, which helps complete the expression. Might be worth some VERY careful dodging and selective contrast if you are planning a print. In any event, he's a beautiful dog and this is a very nice character portrait.

An excellent B&W portrait, Jim!  Robbie looks aloof but very much the gentleman in this shot.  Having lived with a number of Newfies over the years I know exactly what you're talking about in regards to wet and stinky!  All of ours loved to swim in the salt water even when the waves were 4 - 5 ft in January!  Of course, the tide flats added to the odor but we never could bring ourselves to deny them their true pleasure angel

This is a great portrait, Jim, that must be seen large to get the full impact.  There, the strong contrast between his coat and the snow stands out very well.
