Plan B

I started out to shoot sunset at Ruby Beach. Once arriving there and doing a little scouting, I quickly realized by the location of the sun and clouds that it wasn't going to work. What to do? I semi frantically drove back the 26 miles to Second Beach. But dropped off my wife at the cabin in La Push first. As I was almost sprinting down the trail, I could see the low angled warm light coming through the trees and I was sure I was going to miss it! Well this is what I emerged from the trees to see. And, had the beach all to myself too! I think this might be my favorite beach that I have walked on so far.

Chris,
Excellent, very beautiful and well composed "plan B" image! Great reflections in the foreground adding overall balance to the comp. Processing looks good. Purely a matter of personal taste but if it were mine I might back down the orange saturation slightly.

What a great location and you handled the situation beautifully.  I kind of wish the sun was a bit more hidden from the clouds so the sun isn't as bright - but that's a small nit.  Well done

I love the sea stack here, Chris.  I reckon having a plan B is inherent to photographers.  I can't think of too many times when plan A actually works out.  The colors and comp really work for me.  Nice to have a backup plan.

Well, the rushing paid off at least! Very nice sky, and I like the reflection of the clouds in the water/sand, it gives a nice extra structure. Oh yeah, can't help but wonder how great it would be to spent the night on that rock with my hammock between some of those trees....

Great to have the outcome of plan B to be prime material! The large version is great, it really conveys the atmosphere of standing at a beach and viewing out into open sea and it makes me want to be there right now.

Plan B worked, I'd say. I like the composition and reflection. I might bring down the saturation of the yellow/oranges just a little bit, but that is purely personal preference.

Hi Chris,

The entire image looks fantastic to me with the beautiful refection in the foreground water, the midground seastacks, and the sweet light in the clouds and sky. The seastacks are beautifully placed in the frame too.

Wonderful work

Chris,

Wow!  I would say you were more than fortunate to capture this given your change of plans and rushing between locations.  Congrats!

Just gorgeous Chris.  The symmetry is wonderful with the reflections and the clouds are just perfect! Not too many, but just enough for that dynamic sky and reflection.  And abstracts just of the reflected stuff in the sand!  A gold mine of possibilities here.  But of course, you've captured a beauty here.

Borderline, subjective, opinions... but I would agree with a very slight over saturation. But you know what, it sure is gorgeous color though... so personal preference it is.

Thanks folks!

Regarding the saturation. It is processed for print. My prints always come back a little less saturation heavy. I never have processed my web presentations separately. Something to consider. But even a 5 point reduction in the color saps the life out of it for me.

Another winner. This one has great composition with the clouds nicely arranged with the land masses. I, however, prefer some of the previous images of the same subject. They seemed to be more personal and interpretive. But this is an excellent image that I'm sure many would prefer and would buy..
