Lone Owl

My wife and I made a long trek to the northeastern tip of Long Island in search of a Snowy Owl (while seemingly everyone else with a camera went to the same beach not too far from NYC).  When we got there I figured we had a lot of work and walking ahead of us - trying to find an owl at this giant isthmus would be difficult.  Turns out the bird was just a stones throw from the parking lot, don't you just love when that happens?  This is the first time I've photographed a nearly pure white male and enjoyed the somewhat different setting (rocky beach instead of sand dunes)

Nikon D7100 80-400mm VR HH @ 400mm
f/8
1/1640s
ISO 500
Cropped to about 45%, cloned out an OOF bit of vegetation, minor adjustments

I like this minimalist look Luke. At first I was thinking this might look better as a 2x3, but the more I look at it, I like the crop decision you made. The only nit I have and not sure how this would look until you play with it a bit. I might either selectively highlight the sky and tone down some of the "yellow" tint (most likely from morning sun) and go with a more HK look, or I would selectively highlight the lower half (minus the owl) and add some warmth and touch of contrast to it so the ground colors don't look as flat. I would play with it and see if you like the results.

Hi Luke, I like this alot it seems very simple and clean. The sky color is really different and has some of the same colors as the rocks so thats nice. The owl seems like it is floating. Very cool! I wish they would come to NJ.

Kurt,
Thanks - I'll play around with some HK versions, I like that suggestion a lot.

Ashley, they should be arriving soon, they just started showing up on LI in the last week or so.  The warm winter presumably kept them north
