Just Born Minutes Ago

While staying in the Westfjord region of Iceland, I had an opportunity to spend several hours at a sheep farm during lambing season( late May).  It was a nonstop delivery barn for sheep.  This was a good sized farm.  At least 10 sheep were in labor at any one time and this had been going on nonstop for 3 days.  That means little sleep and grab a snack when you can.  Extended families had all gathered to help with the deliveries.  Yes, the sheep do it mostly on their own but the farmers need to be there to help with the occasional breach birth.  For the sheep farmer, this is the most important time of the year.  And despite the incredible sense of urgency amongst the farmers, the mother sheep giving birth were perhaps the most calm.

Very tender image. Clearly far from ideal conditions but it came out very well anyway, I think. The weathered floor and wall give the prefect sense of where this is taking place.

David,

your story is very nice and shows the fits to goal of the gallery which is the relationship of man and animals. That is something I would have tried to portrait in the photo, i.e. the farmer carrying a new born away, or so, something that I miss in the posted image.

Technically it looks good, having good sharpness and well exposured.

Sounds like a madhouse, David.  I like the line-up of lambs, but all the straight lines in the image, make it feel crooked to me, even though I know it's the angle you were at relative to the subjects rather than having the camera tilted.  I don't know if it's possible to straighten it without clipping one of the lambs or not.

Hi David,

Very cute (of course) - and, at least in my opinion, all the horizontal lines here (including the line of lambs) work well together. In this particular composition and situation I don't mind the angled lines at all.

Cheers...
