Lazy New Year's Day
by Alberto Patiño
This is Victor, doing barrel rolls on the driveway on New Year's Day 2016. His cloudy left eye is a birth defect, despite which he managed to survive in the "wild" for about 2 years (vet's best guess), until he showed up in our backyard during Thanksgiving of 2014. The rest, as they say, is history...
Zuiko Digital 150mm f2 + 2X ZD teleconverter + MMF-2 lens adapter, Olympus OM-D EM-1, 1/640 sec at f/4, handheld, ISO 1250, minimal noise reduction in LR6. I was using Victor's antics to get acquainted with the high ISO capabilities of the EM-1 - pleasently surprised....

5 commentsI like the low angle of photography that you have gone for and the stare of Victor is great. Also very nice is the choice of depth of field focusing mainly on the face of the cat. A pitty that the one foot is not on the picture, but that is a minor thing.
Technically the image looks also great, good sharpness and well exposured.
Cats love a good roll and you captured Victor doing what cats seem to enjoy--especially if there's loose dirt
The thin DoF here works well...it really contributes to the success of the image. Definitely worth looking at the Detail View to see the sharpness of the facial region (the nose button is great).
Personally I don't mind at all that the foot is cut-off - this shot is about the facial region. Almost ironically, I suppose a slightly tighter crop (removing even more of the leg) might solve that problem!
On the high ISO capabilities - on the Detailed View there appears to be a fair amount of luminosity noise in the OOF background. Super easy to clean up (and, as usual, the detailed areas of the image have much less easily-noticed noise).
Cheers...
