A Winter Day +rp

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

This is a picture I made in Upper MI about 4 years ago now. It was a warm winter day and for the most part the snow was not very pretty but I did enjoy the looks of this place and made a couple of pictures there. Black and white seemed a good choice I thought since it was mostly that anyway. I don't see this picture in my gallery and don't think I posted it before. Cheers, Nick

What a beautiful winter's scene Nick!  I think B&W was a good choice; it just brings the scene to life.  It looks like a perfect day to be out enjoying nature!  Merry Christmas!

"A winter's day in a deep and dark december".

Merry Christmas to you as well Nick. I really like the snow and the bare bushes scattered around the water. I spent one year in New Hampshire and one of my favorite memories were the stripes that tree shadows produce across the snow. Which you have captured so well here. The sky isn't working too well for you here. I would be tempted to crop it to just above the tallest of the background trees and have the big tree go off the edge of the frame.

Nice serene winter scene, just what I needed since we hardly have any snow here yet.... I like how the pattern  of the shadows in the snow cooperates with the horizontal stripes in the sky, more or less the negatives of each other. Maybe add some contrast in the sky to emphasize that? The main tree is very interesting too, I like that one.

Nick,

A lovely and tranquil winter landscape.  The contrasts, shadows and clarity of the snow-covered landscape is striking.  Perfectly processed.  At least until we get to the sky.  I'm leaning with the other comments about the sky.  I'm thinking more contrast as well - think "Ansel Adams sky...." ok, maybe not all the way black, but I think this could head in that direction.  As it is, the sky and clouds are a little flat compared to the snowy landscape below.  I think a crop works as Igor suggested, but a little different treatment of the sky could be explored.  Of course, it's all subjective and entirely up to the photographer to determine what they like.

I like the way the stream leads up to the tree.  The snow looks pretty to me.  We had 5 minutes of fluries here 2 days ago.  The comp is nice with the diagonal streem leading one to the tree.

Thanks so much guys! Good suggestions with the sky too. I will work on the large file and see how it looks darkend quite a bit. I did a print of this awhile back and it looked pretty nice as it is here, but now I'm thinking a darker sky will be even better. Sold the print anyways! cool Thanks much! Nick

A fine winter scene. I always enjoy the way you can take a simple scene and make a composition that works very well. This is a very peaceful winter image.

Beautiful winter scene! I think the shadows across the fore and mid ground make a nice graphic look to it. That one bigger tree adds some character as well. My first thought about the sky were similar to what has already been said. But then again, " Money Talks"! :^)

Nice one all the way around, Nick, I particularly like those shadows and the range of tones in this wonderful B&W woodland scene. Happy Holidays to you also.

Nick, this is a great, winter b&w scene, sure has me thinking about putting on my snowshoes and going for a walk.  Hope your holidays are great.

This is just a gorgeous scene.  I love the shadows on the snow, the curve of the creek, and the randomness of the evergreens dotting the distance.  I would be tempted to cut a tish off the top and left.  The big tree is a little close to center for my taste, and it stops my eye as a result.  The sky's tone doesn't bother me, but it doesn't grab me either, so playing with making it darker seems like a good idea. I would love to see a repost of this.

Thanks to all of you for the comments and suggestions on this. I did a few adjustments on this version but not really sure I like it better. I cropped a little off the top and left side and also tried to darken the sky a little more.
Thanks much and as always appreciate you taking the time to comment. Happy New Year to all of you! Nick
