Big Leaf Maple Abstract

This was part of a follow-on attempt at freezing leaves in ice.  It seems odd for Macro photography, but this was a smallish leaf and it barely fit in the 11x17 footprint of the baking sheet.  However, since the scientific name of this species is Acer Macrophyllum, it has to be "macro" photography, does it not?  I had a great deal of trouble getting this drier leaf tosubmerge properly, so there were a lot of areas above the ice level.  I decieded to try photographing just one lobe of the leaf.  Note that this was taken with the ice still in the pan, facing a clear sky but with no direct sunlight.  I managed to remove this ice sheet from the pan succesfully, but dropped it while trying to arrange it on my easel (back to the draawing board on that one).  I'll have to wait for another cold spell for further experimentation.

5D3, Canon 180mm f3.5 macro, tripod & cable release, f/29, 1/10sec, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering with +1/3 stop compensation.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Full frame.  Taken November 27th at 8:48 am.

Thanks for the comments on my previous attempt.  I agree about some of the harshness in the ice and had intended to position this one in the shade with a clear sky background until I broke it.

You've again got some fine details here, Dennis, both in the leaf and in the ice.  I think it would be interesting to try this with some highly angled sunlight grazing the surface.  That should let more details show.  I'd probably try removing the ice from the pan and taking it outside but that needs a near (or below) freezing day to keep from having melting obscure the details.

I like the fine detail, Dennis. Suoer sharp. I also like the texture in the ice.
