Crimson Kayaker

The rain/sleet storm had stopped and the clouds were clearing so I was parked on the city dock waiting for the photo opportunities that can happen in changing weather.  I was shooting some shots of the interesting reflections in the unusually calm bay when suddenly this kayaker paddled into the scene.  Poof!  There was that photo opportunity!

Believe it or not, this is a full color photo with minimal processing (some minor brightening and contrast tweaks).  I highly recommend viewing the large version.

Sony ILCE-6000, FE 70-200 F4 G @ 72mm, ISO-100, f/6.3, 1/100, hand held.

An otherwise dreary day brightened up by a poor man's yacht.  Yes, if you wish to stay active in Alaska and other area with less than perfect weather, you should prepare and go.  Good thing the water is calm.  This worked out as a fun photo.  Well done.

Gorgeous, Gary.  Perfect placement of the Kayaker in the frame and with the mountains appropriately placed in the bg.  That nice little patch of open water with the good reflections is also a neat feature.  Lots going on in this image to keep one coming back.  Well done.

the bright kayaker makes this image. I like the reflections;  be glad the kayaker chose the route he did to place himself in line with the reflections

Very nice. The kayaker obviously stands out a lot against the monochrome background, and the patterning in the mountains and the reflection make for a very un-intrusive but still not featureless background. Well seen & captured!

You couldn't have asked for anything better with the red kayak set off against the white background.  Super shot and comp.

This is spectacular.  I love the allwhite, dash of red graphic quality of it. The reflections are cool too, but I can imagine reducing contrast there to keep the eye on the kayaker.

That is just one of those lucky moments, and you captured it perfectly. Absolutely love the bright red kayak in the monochromatic landscape. So very cool!

I love the kayaker contrasting against the white Gary. I wouldn't change a thing.

What a wonderful and unique photo. I just love everything about it and love hearing the serendipitous stories that photographers sometimes tell. Imagine a red kayak in the middle of a white and grey scene! Couldn't have planned it better! Very nicely seen and rendered.

Fabulous.
I'm surprised that it was only at 72 mm.
Very well captured, and as you said, it was serendipity!  I don't think you could have planned this any better.
I am kind of chuckling at what is in the background, on the right side.  Amazing how some really big things can kind of disappear into the background with the right conditions and angle.
Great image!!devil

Gary,
Spectacular shot.  Hard to believe these were all the unadulterated colors from first look.  You must have been thrilled when you first had this on your screen.
