Superior Rocks

This is a picture I made while up on Lake Superior. Since I was early for the fall colors I worked on some other images along the shoreline. This one was shot right at sunrise on a cool misty morning and I loved the conditions. I had a great time!
Thanks so much to all of you for taking time to comment on my November series picture too. I enjoyed doing those!

Large version included. Canon 5D3, 24mm, F/16 with 2 sec. exposure.

Nice combination of blue and pink(ish), works very well together to create a nice mood. I really like your format, but it also makes me very curious about what was going on above this part.

This is quite nice, Nick. The soft sunrise light and the misty water provide a wonderful mood. The darker upper and lower right corners add to the balance of the composition. Well done!

I like the colors of the rocks and the mist, but like Roel, I want to see more above the rocks.  Thanks for sharing.

This was a wonderful departure from the fall colors and I think you used your time well. I like the light play along the rocks with the longer exposure on the water.

Nice and mysterious as presented in a cropped pano, but the color combinations are so compelling I am also hoping for more from top of the image.

Wow, this looks great, quite mysterious. I like it as is, but I have one observation: I think the pink highlights in the center of the image act as "stepping stones" for my eye out of the image, which feels a bit open at the top. Maybe some burning of the highlights directly at the top border can "frame" the image a bit more.

Nick,

It's interesting to me that probably every photographer view this understands the method and affects of images on the shoreline like this.  At least for me though, that knowledge doesn't alter my interest and love of these images.  The mystery, sure, but the light, the colors, all of it, combine for very engaging and pleasing imagery.  The hints of pink light throughout do give rise to wanting to know what's outside and above the frame, but I don't think was necessary to include it.

With regards to the dark shape in the upper right, my very first impression was that it was the hull of a ghost ship... how many ships have run aground in Superior?  I think that shape really adds to mystery and what a viewer can imagine.  Love it.

I got excited seeine the thumbnail on my iphone and rushed to see it on the big screen. This is likely the best landscape image of yours that I've seen a month. It's funny because last night I couldn't sleep and went to look at Guy Tal's images on facebook. And this is a Guy Tal like image in the manner presented originally. I've never been a fan of seascapes where the water looks like fog. And I think that's because it's combined with real cliffs, trees, and sky. But by isolating it in this manner it really sings. It sings in the manner of tree shapes on a foggy bank. I think it would have been nice if the sunlight didn't reach the bottom of the frame but that's a relatively small thing. Great job. I would present this in a lighter frame, especially the large version.

This is a fine combination of pink and blue colors, Nick.  The misty water and the rocks continue the theme of strong contrasts very nicely.  Makes for a wonderfully dreamy image.  You did an excellent job pulling this view out of the larger image.

Amazing image, Nick.  That light on those rocks, the mist, and the water motion are all extraordinary.  I could see cropping a wee bit off the right hand side but that is a reach.  Love it.

I love images like this! It's a personal choice whether you like foggy water or crisp water. I like the effects of movement with water and longer exposures. I never have really like stopped action and crisp detail in water or waves. to each thier own I guess. The faint details below the water and the highlites top this off wonderfully.
